What the All About… Series Is All About

Alison Mitchell | 27 Apr 2023

For many years I had the joy of working for a Christian charity that served in local schools by teaching the Bible. And I noticed two things about the children I taught. First, all the children, whether Christian or not, had heard key Bible stories so often that they thought they already knew all there was to know. And second, children from Christian homes lacked confidence in explaining why they believed that the Bible was true.

These books help children to dig into the facts behind the Bible events, both to bolster their own confidence and also to help them point their non-Christian friends to the evidence.

That’s the background into which the All About… series is aimed. These books help children to dig into the facts behind the Bible events, both to bolster their own confidence and also to help them point their non-Christian friends to the evidence.

Investigating the Facts of the First Christmas

We started with the Christmas story because it’s the one everyone thinks they know. And yet there are loads of fascinating facts that we can uncover to support the truth (yes, Jesus’ birth was announced by angels, and he had a manger for a crib) and point out the myths (no, we’re not told the names of the wise men, or even that there were three of them). In All About Christmas we also investigate the Roman empire that Jesus was born into, and use maps and timelines to reinforce that this is real history that happened at a real time and in a real place.

Marvelling at the God Who Made Everything

The new book in this series is All About Bible Animals, written by Simona Piscioneri. As with every book in the series, the aim is to help children to dig into the Bible for themselves and discover some of the amazing facts behind the stories they read. We start in Genesis with Creation, and then move chronologically through the Old and New Testaments, exploring key characters and events as we go. And the hook for investigating each event is a different Bible animal.

We meet the wonderfully strange platypus, discover why there are so many sheep in the Bible, watch the raven delivery-service, and find out why God cares about sparrows. And all of these investigations are supported by amazing facts and stunning photography.

Both books are fizzing with photos, fun-filled with facts, and quivering with questions (and answers). Then there is a quirky quiz at the end. Also available with each book is a free activity pack which you can download and use to help lead children through these books.

They are fun to read, stunning to look at, and most importantly will help children to explore the Bible for themselves and gain confidence that God’s word is always true.

Alison Mitchell is the series editor of the All about… books, a collection of essential reference guides, bursting with colourful photography and fascinating facts.
