A Responsive Prayer for Uncertain Times: We Believe

Eric M. Schumacher | 25 Jun 2024

This is a responsive prayer that has been written to help guide a group in prayer. This prayer is an excerpt from In His Hands: Prayers for Your Baby or Child in a Medical Crisis. The parts printed in bold type are designed to be said by the whole group. The parts printed in regular type are designed to be said by the leader only.

Leader
The Lord God said,
I declare the end from the beginning,
and from long ago what is not yet done,
saying: my plan will take place,
and I will do all my will.

All
Lord, the future is not uncertain with you;
you are not afraid of what will happen next.
But the future is uncertain to us, Lord;
we are fearful of what will happen next.

The Lord Jesus said,
I am going away and I am coming to you.
I have told you now before it happens
so that when it does happen you may believe.

We believe, Lord, that Jesus went away
through the cross, death, and the grave,
offering himself as the atonement for our sin.

We believe, Lord, that Jesus returned
through the resurrection from the dead,
conquering sin, death, and the devil.

We believe, Lord, that Jesus will come back
to raise us from the dead in glory
to reign with him in a new world.

The Lord Jesus said,
Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you.
Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.

We believe, Lord, that these things are certain:
Christ has died.
Christ has risen.
Christ will come again.

We believe that these things guarantee our peace
even when we don’t know
what tomorrow will bring.

The Lord Jesus said,
Don’t let your heart be troubled.
Believe in God; believe also in me.

We believe; help our unbelief!
