New Year's resolutions continue to be mentioned even though it's nearly the middle of January. Many of those resolutions will focus on health and diets. Many of us strive to look better, get fitter, lose weight and so on. The new year brings a new determination (or does it?) to curb our appetite for food and all things unhealthy.
But what of our appetite for God? That isn't something we want to suppress, many of us need to re-awaken our appetite for him.
Our appetites dictate the direction of our lives - whether it be the cravings of our stomachs, the passionate desire for possessions or power, or the longings of our spirits for God. But for the Christian, the hunger for anything besides God can be an arch-enemy. While our hunger for God - and him alone - is the only thing that will bring victory.
Between the dangers of self-denial and self-indulgence is a path of pleasant pain called fasting. It is the path John Piper invites you to travel in his ebook, A Hunger For God. For when God is the supreme hunger of your heart, he will be supreme in everything.

Following our theme of new year resolutions, I'm sure many of us will be reviewing and refocusing on many aspects of our Christian lives. This might be our planned giving, prayer needs for the first part of the year (however long we deem that to be), what evangelism we might do or get involved in, how can we serve our particular church more / better or perhaps just how we live out our Christian lives.
Maybe the New Year is a good time to remind ourselves of just what we believe. Time maybe to take a step back and refresh ourselves and our minds, get to grips again with the key areas of our beliefs. Well Rock Solid is just the book to help us do that.
Doctrine is never dull in this short and clearly-written book. Glancing down the list of contents may fill you with dread but the (many) authors bring things like justification, penal substitution and the sovereignty of God to life. Throughout the text there is a clear biblical basis given for each gospel truth and there's even a little Bible study in each chapter to help you go to Scripture and think things through and apply them personally. One of the highlights is that most chapters also contain mini-biographies of key church figures from across the ages which shows the way in which they have developed or defended the doctrine under consideration. A really helpful intro to some important and practical gospel truths.

As we look to this new year of 2014, it is plain to see that the church has a very different place in our society to that of the 20th century. Where the church was a fairly focal point of both local life and the state as a whole a hundred years (maybe even 30 years) ago, now the church is seen to have no real place in society. We have become a nation that used to be Christian, now Jesus is no more than a name from the past or a baby that appears at Christmas.
This is why this book is important for us to read. Not just leaders of the church, but also the 'everyday Christian.' What Chester & Timmis do is to show the state of the church as it is today and how we 'should do church' in light of the culture we live in. Their argument is for us to show our culture that church isn't a building but a life lived as Christians together.... continue reading

On Friday we offered you a fantastic book (Serving Without Sinking by John Hindley) - a wonderful spur to recapture our joy of serving. But it's not just our church activities that can become a burden - other areas come under pressure through the shear weight of expectation in this modern world and the pace at which we live our lives.
With his usual warmth and humour, Kevin de Young unpacks the busy, busy, busy epidemic that is sweeping the globe in his book, Crazy Busy. He helps us figure out a better way forward and strike a well-reasoned balance between doing everything and doing nothing.

The sense of panic is starting to rise in many a quarter this week. Just two weeks to go and countless Christmas presents are yet to be bought.

Homosexuality is perhaps the biggest area of conflict between Bible-believing Christians and the world at the moment. It is a subject close to my heart as I have many close Christian friends who have wrestled with this over the years. In any sizeable church there are likely to be a significant number present for whom same-sex attraction is an issue in some way.
Part of the difficulty these brothers and sisters face is the need for secrecy. It is only relatively recently that “the love that dare not speak its name” has become normalised in society as a whole. Sam Allberry articulates the problem compassionately in his book Is God Anti-Gay?, there are still many believers who feel unable to share the nature of their particular temptation for fear of being judged, rejected or misunderstood by others in their fellowship.... continue reading
The "festive period" - Christmas and New Year - often bring a time of reflection for many people. How did the last year pan out? What does the coming year hold? Is it all really worth while?
Perhaps for some Christians it also brings thoughts of how we perceive we have been blessed (or not) by our Sovereign God.
We will inevitably be asked by our non-Christian friends a whole variety of questions at this time of year. Are we ready to answer them?
A book that might help with all these things is If You Could Ask God One Question. A great book about common questions. And there are answers too. Answers from the lips of the most powerful, insightful and extraordinary figure in all of human history: Jesus Christ.

One of the projects at the top of the Christianity Explored translation list is to make the 3rd edition course materials available in French. The guys at CE have been working closely with us, here at the Good Book Company, to make it happen and things are progressing well ...
If you are involved in ministry to French-speaking people (whatever country that might be in), the Christianity Explored team would be interested in hearing from you. Getting in touch will give them a sense of how the planned translation could be used and it will enable them to keep you up to date with how things are going.
Please click HERE to complete their contact form.
And even if you are not actively involved in this kind of area, please do be praying for those who are reaching out the 110 million French-speakers across the globe - that God would be opening eyes and unchaining hearts.
Merci!
This week's featured e-book from The Good Book Company is one for our younger readers.
Gideon wasn't in a great place when God turned his attentions to him. Some might say the "runt" of the litter in a pretty unimportant and insignificant family, he's a bit of a loser and not looking much like a hero. But when Gideon meets with the extraordinary God of the Bible, all sorts of great things start to happen...
