Description

How can you live your best life, be your best self, achieve your goals and make a lasting difference? There’s lots of advice out there, but does any of it work?

In her thirties, Tieler Giles moved to New York to build the life she dreamed of and become the person she wanted to be: one self-help strategy at a time. Several years later, exhausted, she discovered the gospel of grace in a powerful, new way.

In this book, she examines some of the ways in which our culture tells us to pursue happiness, power, identity and love, and shows us how only God’s grace provides what we truly need to learn, grow and live life well.

Whether you’re a Christian or exploring spirituality, get ready to discover how God has the power to renew our minds, heal our hearts and restore our souls.

Linda Allcock

Author, Deeper Still

With precision and skill, Tieler Giles identifies why self-help promises much but delivers little, and points us instead to the person of Christ in whom all things are done, not to-do. I appreciated her wealth of experience as a life coach; the acknowledgement of where self-help can have value; her honesty and her witty observations. This book is joyful, real, comprehensive and practical. Don’t just put it on your to-do list—read it!

Kristen Wetherell

Ministry Content Manager, Unlocking the Bible, and co-author of Hope When It Hurts

Truth and grace mark the ministry of our Lord, and they also mark Tieler’s perceptive book on ditching the endlessly exhausting pursuit of self-help. Full of insight into the human heart, How to Ditch the How-to will expose your need—and Christ’s perfect, abundant grace.

Jen Oshman

Author, Enough About Me

Take it from someone who’s been there: Tieler Giles really has put all the latest self-help trends to the test (manifesting, meditating, setting intentions, positive self-talk—you name it, she’s done it!). In How to Ditch the How-to, Tieler takes us with her on her years of trying to find happiness and fulfillment within herself. She shares candidly the effort and exhaustion, the high hopes and deep disillusionment. And then she shares with us the relief, peace, and soul-deep joy she finally found in Jesus. No doubt every reader will see some of herself in Tieler’s story. Who among us hasn’t succumbed to self-help? But Tieler tells us the better and truer story of who we are, in light of who our Creator is and how he made us to find abundant life in him. Tieler’s story is authentic, transparent, and ultimately full of the best news there is. If you’re tired of trying to keep up, then take up this book and find real rest.

“great encouragement”

The concept of this book is fantastic. The amount of "self-help" books, podcasts, shows, etc. there inundate our wavelengths is astounding! And all of them, every single one of them, miss the most important step: Jesus. Yes, there are many Christian, Jesus-oriented self-help resources out there, but they try to take the Bible and sum it up in a 10 step process. That's impossible! That's disrespectful and dishonoring to the God we love and worship.

Giles structures her book with three parts and ten total chapters:

- Part One: Striving

- Part Two: Searching

- Part Three: Surrendering

Each chapter begins with a quote relating to the topic of that chapter and concludes with two sections: Embracing Grace and Memory Verse.

What I found most interesting about this book was Giles' inclusion of some of the more popular self-help strategies, her journey following these and her conclusion with each one: not enough. She was honest, raw, and transparent with her personal journey to discovering that only the Holy Spirit can give us the self-help we so desperately need and want.

She does a wonderful job of sharing her experience and encouraging her readers to skip the self-help strategies and go directly to seeking Jesus.

I received a copy of this book from The Good Book Company in exchange for an honest review.

“An antidote to New Year’s Resolutions”

(Review written for 'How to Ditch the How-To (ebook)')

I don’t know about you, but I never get my New Year’s resolutions done! I always feel really downhearted because I never achieve what I wanted to achieve. But, perhaps, it’s my perspective that’s wrong. Maybe I need to see myself from God’s perspective, realising the grace that he offers us is enough, and will enable us to see more gradual but lasting transformation. I need to pursue Jesus rather than just my list of immediate weight loss, exercise and reading more! My identity in Christ is what truly changes who I am and how I approach life!

“Pointing us back to Jesus”

“ Living and looking like Jesus is not the product of a carefully crafted to-do list, excellent time management skills or having the commitment levels of a marathoner in training. We grow, change, and become who God has called us to be by His power, not our own.”

Tieler walks through many popular self help how to’s. Many that she her self tried and always came to the conclusion that it was never enough.

I greatly appreciate her honesty and transparency through each experience. Even more so how she was able to flip it around and point us back to the one that can bring fulfillment, Jesus ⭐️

This was a very easy book to read and follow. A great book especially for new believers.

I want to thank the good book company for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
