I'm really pleased to have finally found a clear and simple English edition of this gospel suitable for giving out to those who want to know more. So many gospel alternatives on offer include additions within the book (e.g. advice or tips to read it and things like that). This edition allows the scriptures to speak for themselves and leaves the reader to investigate.
I love the ESV and use it when reading the Bible for myself. However, I've decided it isn't as accessible as the NIV if you wish to give gospels away to friends and strangers who don't know Jesus; particularly if the people in your local context aren't academics.
For example, Luke 1:1-4 is a single sentence in Greek which has been translated as a painfully clause-filled sentence in English - the NIV helpfully begins a new sentence at verse 3.
Similarly, Luke 5:31 (ESV) says "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick."
I don't know anyone who uses the word "physician" - "doctor" would be more accessible English.
Ultimately, I trust that minor translation differences won't prevent people from coming to know and love Jesus - so I've still happily given these gospels to people. However, I'd hate to put unnecessary barriers in people's way, so next time I'll be buying the NIV or something similar.
I was looking for a gospel to give to a colleague. This little gospel fits the bill perfectly. Nicely presented, the cover doesn't try to look all trendy but is not off-putting religious looking. No frills - lets God's word speak for itself. (And at an really affordable price!)
