“Big truths for little ones!”

God’s Big Promises: The Story of Easter by Carl Laferton with illustrations by Jennifer Davison is a faithful Biblical retelling that takes you from Palm Sunday to Resurrection Day in eight short chapters.

The eight stories are taken directly from God’s Big Promises: Bible Storybook. If you have the Bible Storybook it is chapters 73-80. There is no need to own both, unless you like having the Easter story separate. It is kind of nice to have the smaller book just for Easter, and it can be used as a devotional for the week leading up to Resurrection Day! It would also make a great gift for Easter baskets.

The goal of the God’s Big Promises collection is to show how God keeps all of His amazing promises. There is a key at the beginning of the book with icons that you can find throughout the book to see how God keeps His promise: 1) About a King 2) To rescue 3) About His people 4) That He will bring joy 5) About a forever land to live in. Jesus is the fulfillment of these promises, and so, you will find these icons on many of the pages, sometimes all five!

This book is filled with vibrant and eye-catching illustrations. The angels and the fire look like they are glowing and popping right off the page! These beautiful illustrations paired with the easy-to-read text makes it perfect for toddlers and young children. They will enjoy seeing God’s promises unfold in a way they can comprehend; after all, “God loves to hear big truths coming out of little mouths.” And by the end, kids will be happy to exclaim to Jesus: “You are my King and my God!”

“Good for Some”

This book has many Bible stories that are great to read leading up to Easter. However, if someone already has God's Big Promises Storybook, this would be redundant. Only buy this book of you do not have the other.

“A Clear and Engaging Retelling of the Gospel”

The Story of Easter by Carl Laferton is a beautifully written and illustrated book that provides a clear and faithful retelling of the gospel message for children. It walks readers through the events of Jesus’ death and resurrection with a focus on why these moments matter for all of us.

As a parent, I deeply value how this book combines simple yet profound language with vibrant illustrations, making the story accessible to younger children without losing its depth. Laferton does an excellent job of weaving together the narrative of Easter with the broader story of redemption, helping kids see Jesus’ death and resurrection as the centerpiece of God’s plan for salvation.

What stood out to me is how the book doesn’t just tell the Easter story—it invites kids to respond. It helps children understand that Jesus’ sacrifice wasn’t just a historical event but something personal and life-changing.

This book is perfect for family devotions, homeschool Bible lessons, or gifting during the Easter season. If you’re looking for a way to share the good news of Easter with children in a way that’s faithful to Scripture and engaging for their hearts, The Story of Easter is an excellent choice. It’s a resource I’m excited to read with my family year after year!
